Food insecurity in older age – isolation, poverty and poor health

24 October 2017

Senior Lecturer in Social Statistics Kingsley Purdams research on the eating habits of older people has come under recent media spotlight.

As winter draws in, isolation and poverty, plus factors such as embarrassment and stigma can lead to undernutrition in older people.

The research of Kingsley and his colleagues involved interviews with older people who regularly make use of foodbanks. BBC’s NorthWest Tonight news programme picked this up and featured clips of the interviews, whilst the Independent also ran an article on the findings around poverty in older age and the consequential food insecurity and use of food banks.
