New research investigates link between diet and eye health

Optometry researchers at the University of Manchester are examining the link between diet and eye health as we age
The Vision Sciences Lab will study how the eye absorbs a naturally-occurring carotenoid called lutein in a new two year project funded by Kemin/DSM an international nutrition company.
Lutein is only obtained from the diet through foods such as spinach and eggs and is thought to protect the eye from harmful blue light as well as other age-related diseases such as macular degeneration. The project called ELVIS (Effects of Lutein on VISion) will focus on how the eye benefits from lutein, how diet influences lutein accumulation and how lutein absorption is affected by factors such as cholesterol and lifestyle.
Lead researcher Dr Ian Murray said, ‘research shows as we get older the impact of lifestyle and diet becomes increasingly important. Eye health is a big factor in older people’s wellbeing and we’re excited to have this opportunity to better understand how we keep eyes healthy across the lifespan’’.
The study will be recruiting volunteers aged 40-60 years old with normal vision and good general health who will take a daily capsule of lutein for 9 months. The volunteers will undergo a general health examination at the start of the project, followed by 4 regular visits to the Optometry department at Manchester University to measure lutein concentration and other key indicators, along with specialised eye examinations.
